Greeley is named after Horace Greeley, who was the editor of the New York Tribune and came to Greeley in 1859 during the Pike’s peak gold rush. The town was actually founded as a union colony, or an experimental utopian society, in 1869. The name was eventually changed back to Greeley in 1886 by then-governor Benjamin Harrison Eaton. Greeley has grown to an estimated population of 107,348 as of 2018.
